The Elbe-Pavilion in Dessau

Spend the night on the banks of the river Elbe!

Holiday home of the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz

Relax by the fireside, write postcards to your loved ones from the study, or enjoy delightful views from the Belvedere across the Elbe. Hardly a wish remains unfulfilled in the Elbe-Pavilion…

Location

The tower-like Elbe-Pavilion is situated at the end of the Georgenallee in Dessau, at the fringes of George’s Gardens (»Georgium«). In the immediate vicinity are the banks of the Elbe and the »Leopold-Marina». Several views, which are so characteristic for the Garden Kingdom, lead towards it from the garden and the surrounding countryside.

Historic significance

The Elbe-Pavilion is one of those buildings characteristic for the ‘ornamentation of the country’ embarked on by Prince Franz of
Anhalt-Dessau. The Prince’s guiding principle – to combine utility and beauty – is evident in the pavilion itself. As one of the elements of the elaborate flood defence system of the time, the building was of great value: Serving as a lookout, one could – from its belvedere – assess the dangers arising from the flooding of the nearby river. This and similar buildings throughout the Garden Kingdom also served to store the tools needed to protect the flood defences. Guards on dike watch found heated shelter here. Finally, since some of the rooms were decorated with engravings, it is assumed that Prince Franz himself used the building for himself and his guests.

Furnishings

The Elbe-Pavilion offers room for two people, with the possibility of two additional beds in the salon. The apartment is fully furnished. All rooms are heated. The ground floor contains a kitchen/living room with fireplace and a toilet. The first floor holds a small salon and a study. The second floor houses the bedroom with a double bed, bath and a separate toilet. By the house is a barbecue area which you can use. Our aim is to help the friends on the Garden Kingdom to appreciate nature and art. We have therefore deliberately not installed a telephone connection, TV and radio in our guest houses!
